Mammut Atacazo Zip-T Reviewed

Written by

The Mammut Atacazo Zip-T is officially a base layer, but doubles up easily as a single layer for when the sun comes out. Offset seams make it comfortable at traditional rubpoints and the drop tail is ideal for the uk climate. The waffle structure outer surface of the Polartec PowerDry helps make the Atacazo very efficient at wicking while the inner surface is both warm and comfortable.

The long zip goes high up the neck and combined with the fit does an effective job of minimising the impact of wind and cold when needed while allowing easy ventilation when pushing the pace. As a synthetic base layer you expect good wicking and fast drying and the Atacazo doesn't disappoint on these features, or its weight and packed size. The use of an antimicrobial treatment is a pretty standard feature on synthetics these days and while the Atacazo won't compare with merino it's comparable with other sysnthetics in terms of odour protection.
As a baselayer the Atacazo would seem better suited to the winter months where the fit and fabrics combine to produce a warm layer of air but with typical Mammut style it doesn't look out of place as a single layer year round .... although it does show every gram of weight where you don't want it to show and every curve. The long zip and drop tail also make the Atacazo a good choice on the bike where the adjustable ventilation and speed of wicking really make a difference. At the RRP of £60 the price point is reasonable for such a well constructed and multifunctional synthetic layer, still substantially lower than a merino layer, and with street prices being £5 - £10 lower it ticks all the boxes.
